Inspiring Independence: Applying Postoperative Precautions to Your Music Therapy Practice is pre-approved for 6 CMTE Credits by the Certification Board for Music Therapists! Find more about this opportunity here.
No one can anticipate a major medical event. They are sudden, abrupt, and impact how we navigate our worlds.
Surgeries often accompany major medical events. Following surgery, postoperative precautions are put in place to ensure that the surgery remains successful. Postoperative precautions have elements that limit movement and activity, which impacts functional independence and adjustment to life following a medical experience.
Movement is essential to regaining functional independence. Making music is a physical activity. But breaking postoperative precautions can lead to further complications, resulting in more medical experiences, longer recovery timelines, increased pain, and increased fear surrounding movement.
Learning how to work within movement restrictions can empower clients in ways that they’d never expect.
