It’s a good day to celebrate music’s influence on neuroplasticity!

So many elements of learning and adapting are reinforced by repetition. Music has natural systems of repetition. It allows us to form stronger learning pathways, memory recall, and even reorganize our brain after injury and disease.

Engaging with music changes our brain. Music has so many elements which require multiple areas of the brain to process and interpret information.

Strategically targeting these cognitive functions to develop and rehabilitate is why why you see music therapists in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and schools. Music therapists use music to enact molecular change, making learning & living easier and more meaningful.🧠💡🎶

The connection between creativity and curiosity is essential for me. I’ve made time outside of my working hours to chase whatever sparks interest. Rest for me includes creating in spaces that don’t have a clinical outcome.

Leading people through creative processes is a task that requires mental and creative stamina. Designing individualized experiences takes even more energy!

Perspective helps me reflect on my strengths and talents. Inspires me to try something new. Gives me opportunities to connect with others in more ways besides music.

There’s always been more than *one* moment where I see people understand music therapy.

Sometimes it’s inviting someone in to observe a session. Sometimes it’s friends telling me about a hospice story supported by music. Sometimes it’s having lunch with social workers and dreaming about how to have more community resources with trauma-informed care. Sometimes it’s a new nurse calling me for procedural support. Sometimes it’s that mom sharing “we couldn’t have gotten through the doors of this hospital without you.”

It’s never just an elevator pitch. It’s never just conversations with one discipline. It’s repeated, intentional encounters with everyone - from patient care to community partners.

Anytime where people see music’s ability to fill the gap is a win for me. I’m not striving for one perfect “aha!” moment. Because the stakes are too high if I do!

Advocacy is a process. Never a product. There will always be another chance to share about the power and goodness of music therapy!🪩💛💃🏽

Taking on projects that spark your joy when you are balancing patient care can feel like a wishful thought. But it is possible - and the good news is that you don’t have to recreate the wheel to make it happen!

I’ve used this strategy in EVERY job I’ve had - and it’s ended up earning me hospital-wide recognition in every job too.

As a music therapist, I’ve earned Employee of the Quarter. I earned an award given by the Chief Nursing Officer at an internationally renown healthcare institution for providing care that promotes nursing excellence. I’ve taken on projects that make music therapy more visible in my community, which have resulted in more client leads and funding opportunities. All because I aligned my vision with my organization, which made leadership invested in how I was helping them move the needle forward!

Piggybacking on what matters to your place of work is how you can show that you trust the strategic direction placed in front of you. You don’t have to think too hard about advancement - because often times, leadership does that thinking for you.

They’ll reward you with more: more time, bonuses, authority to steward projects, and utilize your input in developing the next iteration of strategic growth. 🤩

A prescriptive view of music listening to improve mood is limiting - there’s not one song that makes everyone happy!

Where your brain processes music is intertwined with memory and emotion. Everyone will have a different experience when engaging with the same song - and those songs may bring up some difficult emotions that music therapists are equipped to help you process through.

I love pre-made mood playlists as much as anyone else on streaming services. Algorithms recommending similar songs in the same aesthetic is cool for discovering new music. Playlists are a helpful tool for categorizing - but they don’t guarantee you a change in your mood.

The word “internship” doesn’t carry the same prestige that it used to and it’s totally okay! Adjusting your description helps quickly build mutual ground when you’re making first impressions with those in outside fields.

Here are some additional phrases you can use:
- Completed my clinical training
- Practicum
- Residency
- Earned my clinical hours
- Fulfilled my education requirements at…

For audiences not as familiar with music therapy, it’s a small change that leaves a big impact. They don’t have to master understanding all the parts of music therapy education to know that music therapy is needed and valued!

Today marks my five year anniversary of my board certification!

I knew I always wanted to be a medical music therapist, but had no idea it would take me to work for nationally recognized healthcare institutions! I love the work I do!

But what about health professionals who stay in the field after five years? MTs, child life specialists, nurses, rehabilitation disciplines, social workers, physicians, and many other allied healthcare professions experience attrition in their fields. It is more than burnout, and should ALWAYS be discussed with other factors, like support and professional development available, career pathways, workload, pay, and advancement opportunities.

I stand here as a music therapist who entered the workforce on the front lines of a pandemic. I’ve been compensated well in each of my jobs (with annual cost of living adjustments!). I’ve asked for my professional dues to be paid for. I’ve negotiated relocation assistance when I’ve taken jobs that required me to move, and I’ve also negotiated sign on bonuses to help cover the gaps in pay between jobs. I’ve been a part of clinical ladder promotion programs. I’ve advocated successfully for adjusting my caseload numbers during busy seasons at work (like supervising students or doing research!). And I love taking my well earned PTO!

It’s been an intentional practice to not make music therapy the only character in my story. When we know how others in our field are supported (as well as best practices in other allied health fields), we explore what contributes to our clinical resiliency. Because at the end of the day, dream jobs are still work. And you are always more than the work you do!

So let’s try this again.

The Grit & Glory Sticker Collection came to be because of Cowboy Carter fitting beautifully into a clinical population shift.

Going from a metropolitan healthcare system to developing a music therapy program focused on expanding access to care for rural areas had me thinking a lot about genres and preconceived notions. I sat with the genre of country, largely because it’s the music of my youth. Country is filled with messages from all walks of life and the truth about the lived experiences of the American dream. Beyoncé addressed this in her album 6 months before this life event for me, and it has been a cornerstone of creativity and inspiration both in this world and my clinical job. :)

Country music does NOT shy away about the hard things. Some of the best anthems we have about hard work, being alone, and heartbreak live in this genre. It’s accessible. It’s memorable. And it resonates. ⭐️

The amount of times I’m caught off guard when someone asks me what I do when I am en route to a patient room is more than I’d like to admit. I’m a music therapist on a mission! And that mission is usually patient care!

When I started putting stickers on the back of my badge at work, I felt more centered and ready to switch gears into my advocacy elevator pitch. The visual cue helped me SO much (even with the guitar on my back and gig bag in my hand).

Advocacy takes a lot of grit, but when done well, we reap the glory. This sticker collection is more than just looks. It is designed to intentionally start small conversations that leave a large impact.

The physical components of dancing can also be challenging. Increased balance and complex motor planning can be higher-level forms of movement that require more strength and endurance than walking.

Music therapists can help with the physical and cognitive parts of this complex dance task. Once mastered, they then work to generalize outcomes to settings outside the dance hall.

Improving balance, utilizing both sides of one’s body, moving in time to rhythm, and stamina can help increase the distance walked and ability to adjust your walking to environmental limitations (like recovering after tripping or stepping up on a curve).

Remembering the dance steps and chaining those steps together lends itself to remembering complex information, like grocery lists, how to fold laundry, navigational directions, and other activities of daily living.
