Sound Principles: Ethical Brand Building for Music Therapists is pre-approved for 5 CMTE Credits (and 3 Ethics Credits) by the Certification Board for Music Therapists! Find more about this opportunity here.
Marketing music therapy isn’t just about visibility and virality… it’s about marketing ethically and responsibly.
Marketing is more than a one-music-therapist job. Visual identity development in healthcare spaces include photographers, brand designers, and healthcare communication professionals. The hospitals and healthcare systems you know and trust? They have whole marketing & brand management teams. And these teams work to ensure healthcare messaging is clear, truthful, and compliant with ethical standards.
Music therapists should have marketing support, too! A strong visual identity communicates your value, credibility & trustworthiness. And it’s essential. Websites, social media, and flyers are not accessories. They are how our services are discovered, shared, and remembered.
But impactful visual identity goes beyond choosing colors, fonts, and logos. It’s thinking strategically about how your brand will be accessed and who will be accessing it.
This course guides music therapists through the principles of ethical brand building. Participants will learn how to develop a clear, authentic visual brand that builds client trust and aligns with healthcare ethics & accessibility policies. Special interest will be given to ADA digital standards like Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, considerations for obtaining media consents, ensuring visuals release the least amount of PHI possible, and ethical portrayal of music therapy services in digital and print spaces. The course will also share how music therapists can partner with marketing disciplines to develop & support a sustainable and compliant brand presence.

The Impact
"Informative and inspiring! While there are plenty of other courses about starting a private practice or using ethical guidelines, I haven’t seen a course that dives so deeply into applying ethical principles to social media, marketing, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Information about using client photos on social media is not as readily available as it should be for those just starting out. Often, people see other businesses posting client photos and assume it’s acceptable—without understanding the permissions and contracts required to make sure that they have legal consent. This course is so valuable, not only to protect our clients and practices but also to uphold the ethical standards of the music therapy field as a whole."
- Ashlyn Feldmann, MT-BC, Music Therapy Business Owner
"Excellent, clear, & concise! This CMTE is tailored to what so many music therapists and practices are trying to do but often don’t think through as thoughtfully. Many music therapists follow others’ online habits without realizing those practices may not be ethically sound. This kind of education is so needed."
- Kaylin Berner Galewitz, MT-BC
"As a music therapist passionate about social media advocacy, I have found the intersection of sharing professionally and ethically to be a gray area that I have struggled to navigate at times. Social media is still so new and with that comes so much to learn about what should/should not be shared, especially when navigating it through a therapeutic lens. This course was so thought-provoking and insightful, utilizing marketing principles and contributions of related fields to help draw clearer boundaries for music therapists in the social media space."
- Amanda Bower, MT-BC
